Fortunately for Microsoft, they aren't tied to HD-DVD in the same way that Sony is tied to Blu-ray, if Blu-ray ends up a clear winner, then microsoft can license Blu-ray and sell an add on player. Sony would be stupid not to license them the technology, with the large user base of 360 owners. Microsoft doesn't own movie studios, so I don't think it's as important to them as it is to the other people backing HD-DVD.
