I'm just judging from the movie trailer, and the documentary by the same name that was based on the book. The dumb part was that 1) it made it appear that MIT math geniuses need to be involved somehow, and that 2) this was somehow an original method of organized play. Teams like this have been operating for decades. The book/movie were pure entertainment, enhanced by the student/whiz kid angle. But it's pure fiction; many groups have done this over the years.
