In addition to the renting thing, DVD just didn't have the exposure that the current formats have. They didn't have Digg, Engadget, Gizmodo, HDTV podcast, etc all promoting the hell out of their format to their large audiences. To not be selling at least as fast as DVD would be a huge failure for the next gen formats.
